Hi all, I found this website in my search for information regarding a malpractice lawsuit against Eric Donnenfeld. Donnenfeld is planning on calling Dr. Schallhorn, Dr. Steinert and Dr. George Waring III as expert witnesses (Seems like they are bringing out the big guns). I have already found a wealth of information in these pages but if anyone has any more information, studies, transcripts etc. it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

her records and whether she's aware what transpired during her surgery....

"Eric D. Donnenfeld, MD: This is a case I have talked about before, but I think it makes a good teaching point so I?m going to talk about it again. A 45-year-old woman came in for routine LASIK. I?m doing my LASIK, I hand off the keratome, and they blow out the keratome. And suddenly there is no flap.

Now we?re looking for the flap, but we can?t find it. And all of you know how to find out if spaghetti is done. You throw it against the wall. If it sticks, it?s done. And that?s exactly what happened. The cornea ended up against the wall. We find it, but now it?s been sitting on the wall for about 5 minutes. What do you do next?

How would you manage this? My major concern is going to be infection with this having sat on the wall. What are you going to do with this flap to make certain the patient doesn?t get an infection?"

Although that incident is interesting/scary, this case deals more with the client had large pupils. (hence bringing in Schallhorn). I know how Schallhorn feels about pupil size and we are obviously looking to refute that so if there are any articles/studies/transcripts regarding LASIK and large pupils please point me in in the right direction. Thanks

For starters you should check 'The importance of pupil size' thread in the peer reviewed literature section of this site. Everything you'll need is there.

Use the name Schallhorn as a key word on the search feature of this site (find it at the top gray bar) and you will find some good points made by patients on this site debunking Schallhorn's arguments. Send all of this to your attorney.

Make sure... unless you are in the military and this is a military case... that your attorney makes a motion to prevent Schallhorn from strutting into the courtroom wearing a military uniform. In a non-military setting this uniform is merely a costume used in an attempt at influence peddling - pandering a position within the government. This is inexcusable, and is prohibited for all federal employees.

Another good thing to do would be to go to the courthouse in the county where Donnenfeld practices and get copies of ALL of Donnenfeld's lawsuits. Make a couple of copies. Send one complete set to Brent Hanson at LASIK fraud so that they can be put up on his blog.

I'm sorry to hear you have large pupil complications from your surgery. This should never have been permitted, and would not have been if the FDA, surgeons and the industry cared about vision. They had all the evidence they needed that pupil size was a huge factor in a poor corneal refractive surgery outcome but they chose to ignore this threat to vision so that they could enlarge their pool of potential surgical candidates and make themselves richer.

If you have not read The LASIK Report at the top of this forum you should do so.

Search this site using words such as pupil size, large pupils, optical zone, spherical abberation, halos, glare, starbursts, GASH, contrast sensitivity, and pupillometer. I'm sure others would be willing to offer suggestions as well.

I hope you read the Junk Science forum. Schallhorn is full of crap. I have a few transcripts. I have a file box full of peer-reviwed articles that contradict Schallhorn.

They brought out the "big guns" on me, too. Casebeer, Slade, and Schallhorn. They are all full of crap.

If you are an attorney, it's imperative that you understand the flaws in Schallhorn's methodology -- THERE ARE MANY, and I can explain each and every one of them to you, AND WOULD BE EXTREMELY HAPPY TO DO THAT ABSOLUTELY FREE OF CHARGE!!!

We like to refer to Schallhorn's study as THE SWISS CHEESE STUDY because it's so full of holes.

I have another favor to ask of this forum... Donnefeld apparently told this story during what is known as Hawaiian Eye 2007. The kicker about this presentation is he was playing music from the 3 stooges in the background. I believe it was videotaped so if anyone has any information on where I could find this tape it would be appreciated. Thanks

Other examples of LASIK surgeons making fun of damaged patients:

http://www.eyeworld.org/article.php?sid=3181

Quote:
Dr. Slade, meanwhile, urged Dr. Dell to perform surgery on a patient, played by John Doane, M.D., Kansas City, Kan., who clearly was a poor candidate optically for the procedure and also humorously exaggerated to be the chief optical engineer for NASA.

The Cowardly Lion, played convincingly by Richard L. Lindstrom, MD, lamented that he could not catch his food because his cheap LASIK gave him bad night vision and halos.

I'll second that. I would like a copy as well. However, I don't know who would be able to get a copy?
