Is there a difference in risk of developing DES (Dry Eye Syndrome) in Intralase vs. LASIK surgery. I will give a full update of my visit with MD later. He said that blades cut a flap of 140-160 microns and laser cuts a uniform 100 microns and hence fewer nerves are severed with a thinner flap and a lesser chance of developing dry eye syndrome. Any thoughts?

It's true that Intralase has been shown to cut thinner, more uniform planar-shaped flaps with smaller standard deviation in contrast with microkeratome blades which cut flaps which are thicker in the periphery and thinner in the center and less predictable in terms of intended thickenss. It makes sense that Intralase cuts fewer corneal nerves than blades. However, the anterior 100 microns of the cornea is more densely inneravated than the deeper layers of the cornea, so the difference in the amount of nerves that are cut may not be as dramatic as it seems...
