This lid scrub 'protocol' was contributed via e-mail by a patient with dry eye:

The problem with the OTC lid scrubs and even the new sterilid (that contains boric acid which is a natural thing suggested for blepharitis on the internet) is that my eyelids swell up like balloons and generate more crust.

Baby shampoo is too weak to do anything with the hard crust that's on my eyelids, but Johnson and Johnson that makes baby shampoo also makes (from the bottle)

Gentle Cleansing Wash (gentle as water?)
soap-free, hypoallergenic
won't clog pores

It's for removing makeup (incl around eyes)- not sure where my wife got it.

After applying it, I use the pads they sell for doing lid scrubs to scrape the eyelid margin (to try to remove the crust blocking the mebomian gland openings).

I use it more than once per treatment and then rinse off later with antibiotic soap- SafeGuard which is also smooth.

I also apply dry skin ointment to the eyelid (not the eyelid margin). I've tried several types and don't have a favorite. Neutrogena makes several fragrance-free, several with Aloe Vera like Fruit of the Earth, Vaseline brand (not vaseline), etc.
