Patients who are happy with refractive surgery outcomes may not have received adequate informed consent

I always ask post-LASIKs if they are aware that they have a permanent LASIK interface. So far I haven't found a single patient who had any idea that this was the case.

Patients with and without serious complications are also largely unfamiliar with the concepts of induced aberrations and nerve damage from refractive surgery. The toll of human suffering from these inevitable consequences of each refractive surgical procedure is high.

Lee Nordan on happy refractive surgery patients;

"He again posed the question that I and many others have been asking for 15 years: Why are we still measuring the results of refractive surgery with a Snellen chart and then resorting to descriptive phrases such as ?patients are happy?? Happy usually means that the patient?s visual function is poorer than desired, but he isn?t complaining ? today."
