Everybody is talking about the recent NPR segment of This American Life on disabilities, "Unfit for Work." The findings are startling: the number of people on disability is skyrocketing, even as work becomes increasingly less physical, and sit-down tasks dominate, either in the intellectual domains or in the vastly expanding service sector. Yet despite that reality, there are 14 million people getting monthly checks from the federal government; this program now costs national taxpayers as much as welfare and food stamps combined. Are there that many sick people in America? The reality is, disability is now replacing welfare as the universal entitlement program.

With the number of people in the United States who have had lasik fast approaching 20 million (not including prk, radial keratotomy),and with sit down jobs dominating, it has to be assumed that the ongoing destructiveness of the lasik procedure itself plays an important role in this increase of people on disability. All one has to do is check out the number of former professional golfers and tennis players who have had lasik and can no longer compete at the level that they formerly were to see that lasik is such an economic drag on the US economy. Or check out accountants in general for that matter...many are losing their jobs right and left because they cannot see well...especially close up.

All this does not bode well for people with money in the bank etc. For with stagnant GDP's and ever increasing debt, countries may follow the lead of Cyprus and literally steal money from people's bank accounts to keep their balance sheets from imploding. Let us face it, Lasik can cause a lot of problems. Too much lasik, and countries may in fact be looking forward to bankruptcy.

Thanks for the info. I will look for that show.
I can't imagine what the true numbers would be. Unfortunately, it's rarely reported.
Nearly 10 yrs of disability now for me after being told that nobody gets complications.
The distortion and disfunction is a living nightmare. Not to mention constant worry about eyes that were never any trouble before and NO FIX.
You are so right. The damage goes far beyond corneas and affects everything.
