Program improves post-LASIK binocular vision disorders

CHICAGO ? Patients with post-LASIK binocular vision disorders can benefit from an Internet-based vision therapy program, according to a physician speaking here.

"Patients can experience a complete resolution of their symptoms," Ella G. Faktorovich, MD, said here during a paper presentation at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery annual meeting.

Dr. Faktorovich studied 18 post-LASIK binocular vision disorder patients.

These symptomatic patients would complain about distance blur, not being able to "focus as well as before LASIK." They also showed clinically significant convergence insufficiency and exhibited accommodative spasm. These patients either had no refractive error or a small myopic prescription, according to Dr. Faktorovich.

Twelve of the patients agreed to undergo vision therapy between 3 and 24 months after LASIK. Nine of the 12 patients completed seven 30-minute internet sessions, and three patients also supplemented with office sessions. The sessions lasted 20 minutes per day for 30 days.

The basic orthoptic exercises included accommodative facility, smooth pursuit, saccadic practice, and convergence and divergence exercises with 3-D images while wearing red/blue glasses, according to the presentation. The therapy is available online at www.eyegem.com.

Dr. Faktorovich reported that the binocular vision disorder symptoms resolved after the vision therapy.
