"The central cornea is thinnest at the beginning of a woman's menstrual cycle and gradually thickens as the cycle progresses, a study found. The finding suggests that estrogen may have a role in corneal physiology, the study authors said."

"The investigators found CCT was thinnest at 1 to 3 days into the cycle, averaging 536 ?m. During ovulation, CCT had significantly increased to a mean 549 ?m (P = .003), and at days 27 to 32, increased to a mean 559 ?m (P = .001), according to the study."

So the moral of the story is... Females should go in for their pre-op exam (pachymetry) 1 to 3 days into their cycle. If you go in between days 27 to 32, you could end up with ectasia when your cycle starts if the surgeon used the 250 micron rule...

But then the surgeon will say he didn't fall below the standard of care because it's not standard of care to ask about a woman's cycle when planning for LASIK.

Oh heck, none of this matters anyway when you have microkeratomes that may cut 50 - 100 microns thicker or thinner than planned, and surgeons don't do intraoperative pachymentry... why even have a 250 rule?... Why even measure corneal thickness?

LASIK is a crap shoot.
