I recently attended a primary care medical conference where another physician told me about a patient she had seen in California who developed a severe post operative infection after LASIK. The infection resulted not only in a tragic loss of vision, but it also instituted a neuropathic pain process that became completely incapacitating for the patient. In a desperate measure, the patient elected to have their eyeball enucleated (removed from its socket) and replaced with a glass eye. This resulted in a resolution of the patients ocular pain.

The list is long, but this complication is chilling. Imagine having an elective surgery to improve your vision and ending up, after enduring excruciating pain... with a glass eye.

Posts like these make me loathe the celebrities who blindly (the pun of all puns) endorse lasik on TV, print, and especially the radio.
